The Program
Our situation is a bit fluid. Your time frame is usually designated as either fall or spring. We allow for up to six continuous weeks in residence sometime between March and July or in the fall period, from late September through November. We shall coordinate times as best we can.

The intention of the Foundation is to offer artists an opportunity to work and develop their ideas away from the normal routine of their current situation. We believe that an artists' experience, exposure, and inspiration are enhanced by the luxury of an extended period without interruption, but with a enhancement of a bit of cross-cultural dialogue. Participants are selected on recommendation from board members, with the criteria that they are serious artists who are not only motivated and independent, but also embrace the concept of working alone in a foreign environment. This opportunity is not to be used as a vacation or intended for children. Any guests are limited to two weeks. In addition, we request that the artists chosen spend most of the residency in Dijon, rather than traveling.

The French language is not required but even a small working knowledge of it has made other artists’ visits much easier and more fruitful.  Drinking a glass of Pinot Noir now and again has also been found to be most beneficial.  To help understand some local cultural mores we highly recommend the first few chapters of a book on French peculiarities called French or Foe.

Surrounded by farms and wine growing villages, Dijon is considered the center of Burgundy. It is a conservative administrative center and a University town, a relatively quiet and safe city of 80,000 one hour and 40 minutes by TGV train ride direct from Paris. There's lots of history here, for the powerful Dukes of Burgundy reigned in Dijon for about 100 years around the 15th century. But the dominant architecture today is 17th century. Our house is right on the border of Dijon’s old center city, located a 12 minute walk to the center of town where you can find most anything you need. There are many restaurants and cafes nearby, as well as several local friends who are incredibly generous in being available to support you if the need arises.  We have a very active young experimental music scene if you wish for a little night life. There is an excellent open farmers market (and flea market) 3 days a week and lots of shops, including an art supply store about a 5-minute walk from home. Bicycling through wine country is only 20 minutes away. There are many churches (Romanesque and Gothic), several museums, and a University campus nearby. There is convenient bus service.  We will provide WIFI if you wish to bring a laptop.
